Picture Jasper ~ Gemstone Spotlight
Picture jasper is a petrified mud that dripped into gas pockets in molten lava. It became superheated and then solidified forming the unusual banded patterns which are typical of this stone. (Thanks for that info, Bernadine Fine Art Jewelry!) It mostly comes from Idaho and Oregon.

Funny how I never really think about how a stone got it's specific swirls. I know that when we looked for a granite counter I wanted one that had an even pattern all over, not really thinking on the beauty of the natural patterns. On a large area, the inconsistenies threw me for a loop, but in these precious little stones, it's beautiful how the different patterns coordinate.
